House of reps to investigate land fraud in Abuja

The House of Representatives has decided to investigate suspected fraudulent land allocations in Abuja prior to the appointment of the current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike. This decision followed a motion by Hon. Jonathan Gbefwi, who raised concerns about the legality of land documents issued during the ministerial vacancy and noted ongoing litigation over some affected lands.

In a separate motion, the House urged the Ministry of Solid Minerals to deploy more emergency response specialists to rescue trapped miners at the Galadiman Kogo mining site in Niger State. This action was prompted by a motion from Hon. Ismail Modibo, who highlighted the urgent need for federal intervention following a mining pit collapse that left over 100 miners trapped. The House also called for an investigation into the mining company's operational eligibility and current mining safety regulations.

Coastal Highway to benefit over 30 million Nigerians

President Bola Tinubu launched the 700km Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway construction on Sunday, highlighting its transformative impact on transportation and regional economic strength. The highway, starting from Lagos and ending in Cross River State, will cross nine states and connect major highway corridors, linking the western, central, and eastern regions of Nigeria.

Tinubu also initiated the design and procurement for the 1,000km Sokoto-Badagry Highway and the 461km Enugu-Abakaliki-Ogoja Road. Additionally, he flagged off the reconstruction of 330 roads and bridges nationwide.

The President commended the Minister of Works, Engr. David Umahi, and Hitech Construction Company for their roles in the project. He emphasized the highway's potential to create jobs, boost economic opportunities, and support maritime industry expansion. The project aims to provide improved access to production and marketing centers for 30 million people, facilitate free movement, and establish export processing zones along coastal states.

Governors and community leaders expressed support for the project, with the Oniru of Iruland, Oba Abdulwasiu Lawal, promising community cooperation and calling for adequate compensation. The initiative is seen as a symbol of hope, unity, and prosperity, and a significant step towards Nigeria's infrastructural development.
