Housing Ministry Pushes for ₦360 BILLION Budget to Boost Affordable Housing and Infrastructure
The Federal Ministry of Housing and Urban Development has requested a significant increase in its 2025 budget allocation to sustain and expand its impact on the nation's housing and urban development sector. This appeal was made during a presentation to the Senate Committee on Lands, Housing, and Urban Development, and the House Committee on Housing and Habitat.
The Minister of Housing and Urban Development highlighted the performance of the 2023 and 2024 budgets, showcasing initiatives that include the Renewed Hope Housing Programme, which has delivered 10,112 housing units across 13 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), creating over 252,800 jobs. The ongoing completion of projects from the National Housing Programme initiated in 2016, expansion of the National Urban Renewal and Slum Upgrade Programme, and construction of Federal Secretariats were also emphasized as critical achievements.
Request for Increased Budget
To build on these accomplishments and drive greater impact, the Ministry has proposed an increase in its 2025 budget allocation from N83.7 billion to N360 billion. The additional funding is aimed at achieving ambitious goals, including:
Increasing the affordable housing stock by 20,000 units annually.
Expanding the Renewed Hope Housing Programme to all 18 remaining states, delivering 250 housing units in each.
Completing projects under the National Housing Programme.
Finishing Federal Secretariats in six states: Anambra, Bayelsa, Ekiti, Nasarawa, Osun, and Zamfara, and constructing new secretariats in Abia, Ebonyi, Kebbi, Kogi, and Taraba.
Completing Building Craft Training Schools in Lagos and Imo to boost artisanship and improve construction quality.
The Ministry also emphasized its commitment to addressing slum proliferation and improving livability in rural, semi-urban, and urban areas through an expanded National Urban Renewal and Slum Upgrade Programme. The proposal includes plans to rehabilitate roads, construct culverts, improve water supply and sanitation, and install streetlights and drainage systems in 100 additional sites across the six geo-political zones, including the FCT.
Call for Support
The Minister expressed deep gratitude to the leadership of the National Assembly for their ongoing support and appealed for their positive consideration of the proposed budget increase. This, the Minister argued, is crucial to achieving the housing and urban development goals outlined in President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
“We remain committed to creating affordable housing, expanding job opportunities, and fostering sustainable urban development for all Nigerians,” the Minister said, stressing the importance of the collaboration between the Ministry and the legislative arm to actualize these goals.
The presentation underscored the Ministry’s readiness to deliver transformative change and reiterated the need for adequate funding to meet Nigeria’s growing housing and urban development demands.
