Lagos Government Cracks Down on Illegal Developments in Mayegun Waterfront, Serves Over 280 notices for Master Plan Violations and Coastal Protection

The Lagos State Government has issued contravention notices to more than 280 illegal property owners and occupants in the Mayegun Waterfront Scheme, located in Eti Osa Local Government Area. The notices highlight issues such as distortion of the master plan, slum formation, and the risk of coastal erosion.

In a statement shared on the government’s official X (formerly Twitter) account on Tuesday, September 17, 2024, it was revealed that the action took place on Saturday, September 14. This move is part of the government's broader strategy to address uncontrolled development that threatens Lagos' urban environment.

According to the statement, those who received the contravention notices have seven days to submit the necessary documents and approvals to validate their occupation of the properties. If they fail to comply, demolition notices will be issued. The government remains committed to upholding urban planning regulations and protecting the state's vulnerable coastal areas.

“To prevent the creation of slums, distortion of the Lagos State master plan, and coastal erosion, the Lagos State Government on Saturday, September 14, issued contravention notices to over 280 illegal property owners and occupiers in the Mayegun Waterfront Scheme in Eti Osa Local Government Area,” the statement read.

Occupants are required to provide relevant documents and approvals within seven days of receiving the notice. Failure to do so will result in the issuance of demolition notices. This enforcement effort reflects the Lagos State Government's ongoing commitment to addressing environmental and urban challenges caused by illegal developments, particularly in vulnerable coastal zones, and to ensure sustainable urban growth.
