Lagos State Government Bans Contractor for Violating Building Regulations, Orders Demolition of Illegal Floors

The Lagos State Government has barred AEOS Engineering Services, the contractor for a 10-storey building located at Block A, Plot 5-10, Obanikoro in the Oke-Ira Scheme, Somolu LGA, from engaging in any further construction within the state. The ban was imposed due to significant violations of the approved building plan.

The authorized plan permitted the construction of only six floors, which included a basement, ground floor, and three additional levels. However, the developer unlawfully extended the building by adding three extra floors beyond the approved limit.

This action was officially confirmed in a statement by Adu Ademuyiwa, Director of Public Relations at the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA). The announcement was further detailed during a site inspection led by Dr. Olajide Babatunde, the Governor's Special Advisor on e-GIS and Urban Development, accompanied by LASBCA’s General Manager, Arc. Gbolahan Oki, and other government officials.

Initially, LASBCA sealed the site after discovering the unauthorized additional floors. Following a three-week grace period given to the developer to address these infractions, there was no compliance, prompting the government to take stricter enforcement measures.

According to the statement, Dr. Olajide emphasized that the approved design was strictly for a six-storey structure, with any addition beyond this being a direct violation of the state's building codes. As a result, AEOS Engineering Services is prohibited from operating or managing any projects within Lagos State until further notice.

The agency has confirmed that the site will remain closed and that the unauthorized three floors will be demolished to ensure adherence to regulations. Furthermore, the Lagos State Government has indicated plans to prosecute both the property owner and the developer for these violations, reinforcing its commitment to uphold safety and legality in building practices across the state.

The statement concluded with a strong warning that anyone involved in unauthorized construction activities in Lagos will be held accountable, and the government will enforce the law against any attempts to bypass established regulations.
