Lekki Airport Development Advances with Upcoming Site Inspection

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has announced that aviation regulators will visit the state next week to conduct a site inspection and assessment of the proposed Lekki International Airport before construction begins.

The first phase of the project, initially estimated at N171.64 billion (approximately $450 million), is subject to fluctuations in Foreign Exchange (FOREX) rates.

Sanwo-Olu reiterated his administration’s commitment to delivering the airport and other critical infrastructure projects across the state. He made these remarks while touring Alaro City and the Universal One Development along the Lekki-Epe Expressway, accompanied by key members of the Lagos State Executive Council and senior government officials.

According to the governor, these initiatives will play a crucial role in attracting future investments to Lagos. During the tour, he visited four major companies within Alaro City: Ariel Foods, BUA, TY Danjuma Logistics Park, and Universal Homes.

The proposed airport, situated about 10 kilometers from the Lekki Free Trade Zone (LFTZ), was initially slated for completion in 2028. Designed to accommodate large aircraft such as the Airbus A380, the facility will be a Code F-compliant airport, covering 3,500 hectares.

To facilitate its development, the Lagos State Government recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Summa Group, an internationally recognized construction company. Sanwo-Olu described the project as a game-changer, poised to enhance connectivity, drive economic growth, and attract global investments.

“This landmark initiative is a crucial step in our vision to improve Lagos’ connectivity, boost economic expansion, and invite international investors,” he stated via his official X (formerly Twitter) account. Additionally, the governor revealed that preparations are underway to commence work on the Green Line Rail project, which will link Marina to Lekki, with funding discussions currently in progress.
