Federal Government Begins Construction of 6,612 Housing Units Across 13 States to Address Housing Deficit, Says Minister

The Federal Government has announced that construction has begun on 6,612 housing units across 13 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) as part of its ongoing infrastructure development initiatives. The Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Ahmed Dangiwa, made this announcement recently in Abuja, stating that the project aims to reduce Nigeria's housing deficit, which is a central goal of the federal government's Renewed Hope Agenda. The initiative represents a crucial milestone in the effort to provide affordable housing for citizens while also stimulating economic growth.

Speaking on the occasion of Nigeria's 64th Independence Anniversary, Dangiwa described the event as the beginning of a new era of prosperity for the nation. He urged citizens to perceive the current economic challenges as necessary sacrifices for achieving sustainable growth.

In a statement issued on Monday by Mark Chieshe, Special Adviser on Media & Strategy to the Minister, Dangiwa emphasized that this year's Independence Anniversary symbolizes a significant turning point in Nigeria's efforts to harness its resources for the benefit of all its citizens. He commended President Bola Tinubu for dismantling barriers to economic progress, such as fuel subsidies and the multiple foreign exchange systems that have long impeded the nation's growth.

"The siphoning of our national wealth has ended under President Tinubu's leadership," Dangiwa noted. "We are now transitioning into a phase where Nigeria’s resources are being allocated towards critical infrastructure projects, fostering industrial development, and making the country a more prosperous and habitable place."

The Minister highlighted the impact of the Renewed Hope Agenda, particularly in housing and urban development, noting significant progress and reforms. He cited the ongoing construction of 6,612 housing units in 13 states and the FCT, many of which are close to completion.

Dangiwa also stressed the Ministry's dedication to a "Zero Tolerance for Uncompleted Projects" policy and elaborated on urban renewal and slum upgrading projects taking place in 26 locations across the country. These projects aim to provide crucial infrastructure such as roads, water supply, electricity, and street lighting.

He further mentioned the upcoming launch of the National Social Housing Fund, a key component of President Tinubu's commitment to making homeownership affordable for all Nigerians, regardless of their income level. Additionally, Dangiwa highlighted ongoing partnerships with the World Bank aimed at enhancing land administration and unlocking over $300 billion in dormant capital.

As the nation celebrates its independence, President Tinubu has called for a modest celebration, encouraging Nigerians to remain hopeful and patient as the country continues to work towards a brighter future.
