Wike Vows To Sack Underperforming FCT Contractors

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has issued a stern warning that contractors failing to meet their contractual obligations will be removed from ongoing projects within the FCT.

Wike delivered this message during a site inspection of the Apo roundabout to Wassa road in Abuja on Friday, expressing frustration with the slow progress of the work. He urged all contractors to strictly adhere to their commitments and warned against delays.

"We have zero tolerance for contractors who do not perform. If you fail to deliver on your contract, you will be removed without any exceptions," Wike stated.

He emphasized that both local and international contractors would be treated equally, with the primary focus being the successful completion of the project. "It doesn't matter whether you are an indigenous or foreign contractor—our priority is the work. If you do well, we will continue working with you; if not, you will be dismissed and held accountable," he added.

Wike also addressed the revised completion date for the road, which had been pushed from the original December-January target to May. He expressed his dissatisfaction, calling the delay unacceptable. "This is quite disappointing. I am not satisfied with the current pace," he said.

The minister pointed out that despite CGC, the company in charge of the project, being well-regarded, the progress was lacking. "When I visited the site previously, there was insufficient equipment present. I believe they brought in additional machinery because they knew I planned to inspect today," Wike commented.

To expedite the work, Wike directed Engr. Richard Yunana, the Director of Engineering Services at the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA), to secure a firm commitment from CGC on meeting the revised timeline. He further requested a detailed work plan from the company, highlighting the importance of the road to the FCT.

"This road is crucial for easing traffic congestion and boosting economic activity in the area. It's essential for us to be actively monitoring progress on the ground rather than relying solely on office reports," Wike concluded.
