Ibadan Airport Upgrade to Boost Trade, Tourism, and Regional Connectivity

The Federal Government has authorized the temporary shutdown of the Samuel Ladoke Akintola Airport (SLAA) in Ibadan to facilitate critical upgrades aimed at transforming the facility into an international-standard airport.

This development is part of a broader effort by the Oyo State Government to modernize the airport and enhance its infrastructure in line with global aviation benchmarks.

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) confirmed the closure in a statement released on Saturday by its Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Mrs. Obiageli Orah. According to the announcement, the Nigeria Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) has suspended operations on the airport’s runway in accordance with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards. FAAN noted that the measure is a necessary step to maintain safety and compliance throughout the renovation process.

“The Federal Government has approved the temporary suspension of operations at the Samuel Ladoke Akintola Airport, Ibadan, to allow for upgrade works,” the statement said.

“In line with ICAO’s safety protocols, NAMA has shut down the runway to facilitate this process. This forms part of Oyo State’s strategic plan to transition the airport from domestic status to an international facility through comprehensive remodeling and infrastructure improvements."

The statement further emphasized that the temporary closure is essential for ensuring the safety of both travelers and airport personnel during the ongoing construction activities.

While specific details on when operations will resume were not disclosed, the upgrades will include structural enhancements and safety improvements aimed at meeting the criteria for international flight operations. FAAN appealed to passengers, airlines, and other stakeholders for patience and cooperation during the airport’s transformation, stressing the long-term advantages of the project.

Background Information

Back in February 2025, Michael Achimugu, Director of Public Affairs & Consumer Protection at the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), had indicated that the Ibadan airport might be closed for up to six months starting in March to carry out necessary maintenance and upgrade work. This statement aligns with the recent developments now unfolding at the airport.

Earlier, in August 2024, the Oyo State Government had revealed plans to expand and elevate the Samuel Ladoke Akintola Airport into an international aviation hub. The proposal outlined upgrades aimed at boosting operational capacity, improving passenger services, and strengthening the state's economic prospects by supporting increased trade, tourism, and regional connectivity.

The temporary closure marks a significant step in the collaborative effort between federal and state authorities to realize these ambitions and bring Ibadan’s airport infrastructure up to international standards.
