Lagos Begins Demolition at Bombata Market to Boost Urban Renewal and Safety
The Lagos State Government, through its Building Control Agency (LASBCA), has initiated the demolition of makeshift structures in Bombata Market, located on Lagos Island.
This action follows the expiration of a 30-day notice issued to residents and business operators to vacate the area.
According to a post on X by LASBCA, the agency stated, “In line with the Lagos State Government’s commitment to Urban Regeneration, Development, and the reduction of environmental and security hazards, LASBCA has commenced the removal of shanties in Bombata Market, Lagos Island, following the conclusion of the 30-day ultimatum provided to occupants.”
In October, LASBCA had issued a final one-month warning to the market operators, after multiple previous notices, stressing the importance of addressing environmental concerns associated with the market’s deteriorating infrastructure.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu previously directed the demolition of Bombata and Jankara Markets in October 2023 as part of the state’s broader urban renewal and flood prevention initiatives for Lagos Island.
Sanwo-Olu emphasized a strict approach, stating that the Ministry of Environment would begin issuing demolition notices to structures constructed over drainage systems. “These shops have blocked all drains, contributing to flooding and environmental pollution,” he said. “We must protect the larger community rather than allow a few to endanger public safety.”
