Nigeria and India Forge Partnership to Advance Housing and Urban Development
In a significant step toward advancing affordable housing and sustainable urban development, Nigeria’s Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Ahmed Musa Dangiwa, met with Shri Manohar Lal, India’s Minister of Housing and Urban Affairs, to discuss strengthening ties in housing and urban planning. The meeting took place during the 12th edition of the World Urban Forum (WUF12) in Cairo, bringing together international leaders to address global urbanization challenges.
The discussions focused on areas of mutual benefit, including Nigeria’s Renewed Hope Cities and Estates Programme, which aims to provide affordable housing and improve city resilience. Nigeria also highlighted its plans to establish Building Materials Manufacturing Hubs to support affordable housing projects, stimulate local production, and create job opportunities. With India’s extensive experience in social housing, sustainable city planning, and slum redevelopment, the collaboration promises to offer Nigeria valuable insights and support in tackling its urban challenges.
Minister Dangiwa emphasized the importance of this collaboration, noting that both countries can learn from each other's experiences. "Our shared experiences lay a strong foundation for knowledge exchange and innovative housing solutions," he said. India’s expertise in urban development has potential applications for Nigeria’s goal to create affordable, inclusive urban spaces for its citizens.
Shri Manohar Lal expressed India’s support, commenting on the mutual benefits of the collaboration. “We have learned how to improve our practices and would be delighted to support Nigeria’s efforts in addressing urban housing and infrastructure needs,” he remarked.
The meeting highlights Nigeria’s commitment to international partnerships as it pursues its Renewed Hope Agenda for housing and urban development. Through collaboration with India, Nigeria aims to create affordable and inclusive housing options, fostering sustainable communities and addressing the challenges posed by rapid urbanization.
